GHK-Cu (glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine:copper(II)) is the naturally occurring copper complex of the GHK tripeptide, first isolated from human plasma. The Cu(II) ion is coordinated by the nitrogen from the imidazole side chain of histidine, the alpha-amino group of glycine, and the deprotonated amide nitrogen of the glycine-histidine peptide bond.
Research protocols typically use 1-2 mg/day via subcutaneous injection, 5 days/week, in cycles of 8-12 weeks followed by 2-4 weeks off. Some protocols use 100-200 mcg/day. Topical application is also common in cosmetic formulations. Reconstitution: 50 mg vial with 3 mL sterile water yields 16.67 mg/mL. Active at very low nanomolar concentrations. Long history of safe use in wound healing and skin care; naturally occurring and nontoxic.
Mechanisms of Action
5Benefits
7Wound healing
RecoveryResearch indicates 40-50% acceleration of wound closure compared to control treatments. Promotes healing in skin, lung, bone, liver, and stomach lining.
Collagen production
RecoveryIncreases collagen production by up to 70% in laboratory studies, along with elastin and glycosaminoglycan synthesis in skin fibroblasts.
Anti-aging skin effects
LongevityWidely used in anti-aging cosmetics (INCI name: Copper tripeptide-1) for reducing fine lines, improving skin elasticity, and promoting skin regeneration.
Anti-inflammatory action
ImmuneSuppresses pro-inflammatory cytokines and promotes resolution of chronic inflammation, with potential systemic anti-inflammatory benefits.
Antioxidant protection
LongevityProvides antioxidant defense through gene modulation and direct radical scavenging, protecting against oxidative stress and degenerative conditions of aging.
Hair growth stimulation
RecoveryDocumented role in promoting hair growth through follicle stimulation and scalp tissue support.
Cognitive health support
CognitiveImplications for cognitive health through prevention of oxidative stress and support of neuronal survival pathways.
