Bremelanotide is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide derived from the melanocortin peptide hormone alpha-MSH (alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone). It is an active metabolite of melanotan II, differing by the absence of the C-terminal amide group.
FDA-approved dose is 1.75 mg subcutaneous injection, self-administered at least 45 minutes before anticipated sexual activity. Used as-needed (PRN), not daily. No more than 1 dose per 24 hours or 8 doses per month. Common side effects include nausea (40%), flushing (20%), and headache (11%).
